## Biography

Dutch painter who, with his brother Jacob \(1585-1656\), was in in Rome \(c. 1605\) and they returned to Holland with a new kind of history painting, much influenced by Italian ideas and also by Elsheimer. The principal importance of the brothers is that they passed these ideas on to Rembrandt, who may have been Jacob&#39;s pupil for a few months.
