# MASTER of the Brunswick Monogram [View the canonical artist record]() ## Artist - Profession: painter - School: Flemish ## Biography Flemish painter who was active in Antwerp and is named after a painting of the Parable of the Great Supper \(Luke 14\) in the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich Museum in Brunswick. It is signed with a monogram found only on this panel and apparently composed of the interlocked letters J, v, A, M, S and L. The identity of this master has been greatly disputed; there is no agreement as to how the interlinked letters of the monogram should be read. A dozen or so small pictures have been attributed to the same hand; about half depict religious subjects in the open air, and most of the others are brothel scenes. The quality of the pictures is uniformly high. The artist's observation of nature, his fine drawing, and ability to integrate figures into a landscape make him an important forerunner of Pieter Bruegel.
