## Commentary

The heroic style, the lively expressiveness and the dynamic plasticity of Rubens&#39;s monumental figures must at some moment have become a clear guideline for the De Nole studio in their production of large, free-standing sculptures. The contrapposto figures of the apostles in St Rumbold&#39;s Cathedral in Mechelen are characteristic.
