## Commentary

The subject of the scene is an illustration of the popular adage &#34;Sine Baccho et Cerere friget Venus&#34; \(Without Ceres and Bacchus, Venus would Freeze\): without food \(Ceres, the Roman god of agriculture\) and wine \(Bacchus\), love \(Venus\) is left cold.
