## Commentary

Torelli painted this portrait while he worked at the Dresden court in Saxony. The sitter of the portrait, Joseph de Saint Étienne Borne, was a colonel of the royal guard and adjutant-general of the Saxon Infantry. However, he renounced this military career to enter religious life.
