## Commentary

Hendrick van Cleve was one of those northern artists whose art was fundamentally determined by the experiences he gained in Italy. Two series of engravings depicting towns and landscapes are known executed after his drawings and published by Philip Galle, in which real and imaginary elements are combined. This also characterizes the present drawing which is packed with a number of motifs of different kinds.
