## Commentary

The identity of the sitter of this half-length portrait is not known, but she is probably a member from the rich mercantile classes or the wealthy urban citizenry. She must have been a married woman, since it was the custom in the Northern Netherlands to wear one&#39;s wedding ring on the right index finger, as she does.
