# Study of the Christ Child [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [RAFFAELLO Sanzio]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Pen and ink over lead point, 283 x 161 mm ## Commentary In certain instances Raphael carried over the entire compositional structure of the older masters' works, such as variations on Leonardo's pyramidal ordering. In others, he appropriated only particular details. This occurred in Raphael's intense scrutiny of the Christ Child from <A onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/m/michelan/1sculptu/1/5madonn1.html'\)" HREF="/html/m/michelan/1sculptu/1/5madonn1.html">Michelangelo's Bruges Madonna.</A> This drawing shows Raphael's determination to capture the swelling contours of the Child's twisting torso and weight-bearing leg, as well as the articulation of the opposite jutting thigh, with leg and foot in the process of stepping downwards.
