## Commentary

Raphael designed this putto for the decoration of the Stanza di Eliodoro. The putto bears a ring and feathers, Medician symbols, to honour Pope Leo X. The exquisite care and attention lavished on this design, for what was to be a very minor detail within the context of the decorative programme, is as puzzling as it is delightful.
