## Commentary

Codex Manesse 1310-40 Manuscript \(Codex Pal. Germ. 848\), 355 x 250 mm Universitätsbibliothek, Heidelberg This miniature is from the famous Codex Manesse, the most comprehensive collection of ballads and epigrammatic poetry in Middle High German language. It depicts a tournament scene: the victory of Sir Walter von Klingen, watched by ladies. The medieval tournament was a mixture of sport, military training, entertainment and business. As entertainment, it was lavish and spectacular, much enjoyed by the court, especially by ladies.
