## Commentary

Christ and the Adulteress c. 1525 Oil on canvas, 131 x 197 cm Gallerie dell&#39;Accademia, Venice The Jews are scandalized at the well-dressed and utterly serene adulteress, who faces the imminent prospect of stoning. Christ calmly defends her. It was a hugely successful work, recycled in every debate on justice and forgiveness.
