# Pope Gregory the Great \(?\) and St Matthias [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MASOLINO da Panicale]() - Date: 1401-1450 - Technique: Tempera and oil on poplar transferred to fibreboard, 126 x 59 cm ## Commentary Pope Gregory the Great \(?\) and St Matthias 1428-29 Tempera and oil on poplar transferred to fibreboard, 126 x 59 cm National Gallery, London This painting and <A onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/m/masaccio/jerome.html'\)" HREF="/html/m/masaccio/jerome.html">St Jerome and St John the Baptist</A> by Masaccio are two sides of a single panel that was divided in two. This panel was part of a double-sided polyptych in Santa Maria Maggiore on which Masaccio and Masolino worked together. Due to the early death of Masaccio, Masolino had to finish the job alone. The polyptych is no longer in its original place. The panels making up the front side were separated from the back ones. Although in the 17th century the six major panels were still in Rome in Palazzo Farnese, in the 18th century they were dispersed.
