## Commentary

After winning the Prix de Rome in 1804, the artist was given a fine municipal reception in Bruges, for which he expressed his gratitude by presenting the Academy with a painting immortalising its chairman, François Wynckelman, and director, François van der Donckt. They are shown sitting and standing respectively beneath Odevaere&#39;s self-portrait.
