# Capital [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, Catalan]() - Date: 1001-1050 - Technique: Stone ## Commentary At the beginning the eleventh century, in the south of France and in Catalonia, there was a search for the technical means to solve the problem of adapting the surface motif used on panels \(interlacings, palmettes and rosettes\) to the rough-hewn surfaces of a capital. As a result, there appeared a series of capitals based on the Corinthian scheme which show the pre-Romanesque shallow relief giving way to chamfering and deep grooving.
