# St Matthew [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MICHELANGELO Buonarroti]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Marble, height 271 cm ## Commentary The unfinished figure of Matthew has survived as evidence of a commission given to Michelangelo by the Arte della Lana in 1503. The artist was commissioned to produce a total of 12 figures depicting the Apostles, which was destined for Florence cathedral.
