# Apostle St Thaddeus \(Jude\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [GRECO, El]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 97 x 77 cm ## Commentary Apostle St Thaddeus \(Jude\), 'the other Judas, not Iscariot' \(John 14:22\), apostle and martyr, said to have preached the gospel in the countries neighbouring Palestine with Simon Zelotes, after Christ's crucifixion. He was martyred in Persia. Jude's attribute is a club, halberd or lance, according to various accounts of his death. His inscription in early Italian painting is 'Qui tollis peccata mundi' 'Thou who takest away the sins of the world', from the Gloria of the Mass.
