## Commentary

The Ancient Egyptian obelisk of Pharaoh Thutmose III \(known as Dikilitaº in Turkish\) was re-erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople by the Roman emperor Theodosius I \(347-395\). Theodosius I, known as Theodosius the Great, was the last Roman emperor to rule over both the eastern and the western halves of the Roman Empire. The base of the obelisk, erected by Theodosius, shows scenes with the emperor. The photo shows the east face of the pedestal which represents the emperor offering laurels of victory.
