# The Lamentation [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [GOSSART, Jan]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Pen and brown ink, brush and brown ink, brown wash, black chalk, 277 x 305 mm ## Commentary The subject of the Lamentation enjoyed a strong visual tradition in Northern art, one that Gossart certainly drew upon. He based his composition on <a onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/d/durer/2/12/7smallp/3/27\_small.html'\)" href="/html/d/durer/2/12/7smallp/3/27\_small.html">Dürer's Lamentation</a> from the so-called Small Passion, a series of thirty-seven woodcuts.
