## Commentary

Infant Jesus with an Angel c. 1480 Coloured wood Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich The figure of Christ was central to every aspect of medieval life and thought, and no single image could encompass all the meanings that he embodied. Christ was both human and divine. Even as a child he could be seen either as a vulnerable and appealing infant \(such as in the present wood carving\) or as a celestial prince.
