## Commentary

This painting dates from a period when Renoir, together with Monet, was formulating a new pictorial language which would come to be seen as typically Impressionist. Renoir here depicts a garden from a high viewpoint, which allows him to paint a broad foreground filled with wild flowers, creating a vaporous surface with softened outlines.
