# Winged Altarpiece [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [LEDERER, Jörg]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Painted limewood, 180 x 218 cm ## Commentary Winged Altarpiece c. 1515 Painted limewood, 180 x 218 cm Szépmûvészeti Múzeum, Budapest This altarpiece was carved and painted in Kaufbeuren in Allgäu and once stood in the village church of Hinterkirch in South Tyrol. In the tabernacle Mary stands with the Child Jesus, who hands her a pomegranate, a symbol of love. To the right of Mary is the bishop St Nicholas in full canonicals, on the left, Mary Magdalen holds a vessel of ointment. On the sides are scenes from the lives of each saint.
