## Commentary

As in the biblical story, the prophet Elijah looks up at the ravens that have come to feed him. Here, however, he is not in the desert but in a fertile, hilly landscape with three cows. The Delftware painter fell back on a landscape print by Nicolaes Berchem in which three Dutch cows are the most prominent feature. The plaque is dated on front and back: 1658.
