# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, French]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary In the cities, the defensive potential of individual houses was of no consequence. Rather than developing particular building types, architecture would concentrate on the decoration of the façades, resulting in magnificent frontages featuring arcades, galleries and twin openings. One of the best preserved examples of Romanesque city architecture in France is the town house of the Granolhet family in Saint-Antonin, dating from the second quarter of the twelfth century. The three-storey façade had three distinct levels. On the ground floor, pointed arches open out into a vaulted hall. On the second floor, the whole width of the façade is taken up by a window set in a framework of delicate molding. The top storey has three twin openings whose outlines are traced by string courses.
