## Commentary

Among Bélanger's best known works was the little lodge of Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne, erected in 64 days in 1777 as a result of a wager with Queen Marie-Antoinette, only sister-in-law to Comte d'Artois, who had the lodge built. Altered in the 19th century, the pavilion structure displays a doomed, semi-circular, projecting drawing room. The austere rustication of the façade contrasts charmingly with surrounding English garden designed by the Scot Thomas Blaikie and furnished by Bélanger with numerous structures, including a Gothic Revival pavilion. The photo shows the entrance façade.
