## Commentary

Hunting as a pastime of the ruling class goes back to the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, but seems not to have been a particular passion of the Greeks and Romans, nor of the 'barbarian' nations who replaced them. By the time of Charlemagne, hunting had become the sport of kings. The golden age of hunting was the 14th century. The picture shows a Flemish tapestry from the 15th century depicting the end of hunt. Two greyhounds receive their reward after the killing of the deer.
