## Commentary

At the age of 25, Leibl traveled to Paris at the invitation of Gustave Courbet. Contact with the world of French painting played a decisive role in Leibl&#39;s career. At the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, he returned to Germany where he moved to the province and painted scenes of country life.
