## Commentary

This is a highly controversial painting. Some critics regard it as a work of great beauty; others play down its importance, claiming that the saint, although displaying an undeniable beauty of form, has no particular facial expression, being nothing more than a simple reproduction of the youth who served as the artist&#39;s model.
