# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, English]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Burghley was built for Sir William Cecil, later 1st Baron Burghley, who was Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I of England, between 1555 and 1587. As a young scholar William Cecil was a member of the intellectual humanist group at St John's College, Cambridge; in 1548 he became secretary to Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, Protector of England during Edward VI's minority. The Protector's enthusiasm for architecture was passed on to Cecil, and after his master's execution in 1552 he took up the cause of classical design. Burghley House is an example of Elizabethan country-house architecture.
