## Commentary

This bouquet of flowers in a gold-work vase placed on a marble slab was the artist&#39;s admission piece for the Académie Royal de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1764. Bailly continued the tradition of flower painters of the previous century, whose compositions were veritable floral encyclopaedias.
