## Commentary

In scene 16 \(the last scene of the cycle\) on the south wall, the funeral of St Benedict is depicted. After Benedict&#39;s death, two brothers of the order see the saint ascending to heaven on a path covered with carpets. His body is buried in Montecassino in the oratory of St John the Baptist, which Benedict himself had built over the ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo.
