# St Augustine in His Cell [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [BOTTICELLI, Sandro]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Tempera on panel, 41 x 27 cm cm ## Commentary The simplification of composition which is so characteristic of Botticelli's later works is also a feature of this small devotional picture which shows St Augustine the scholar. The worn-out quills and crumpled pieces of paper on the floor are signs of his intensive studies. Under the red bishops cloak the saint is wearing the habit of an Augustinian hermit, even though he was never a monk.
