## Commentary

Members of the De Nole studio were innovatory in their monumental portico altar frames. These perhaps acquired their most impressive form in the high altar of Antwerp Cathedral, designed in 1618 and since demolished, but a number of other altars have survived. The high altar of the Shrine of the Virgin Mary in Scherpenheuvel is an important example.
