The recumbent figure of Jerome can be compared with <a onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/r/raphael/4stanze/1segnatu/1/athens02.html'\)" href="/html/r/raphael/4stanze/1segnatu/1/athens02.html">Raphael's Diogenes,</a> reclining on the steps in the School of Athens. The landscape throughout features symbolic motifs - woodcutter, shepherd and his flocks, and donkey beaten by its owner.
