# Tomb of Giovanni Buoncompagni [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [AMMANATI, Bartolomeo]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Marble ## Commentary In 1572 Ammanati was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII to create a tomb for his nephew, Giovanni Buoncompagni, which was erected in the Camposanto of Pisa. It consists of an aedicula framing a central statue of the Risen Christ, draped and showing his wounds. This is derived from a <a onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/m/montorso/servi1.html'\)" href="/html/m/montorso/servi1.html">similar statue</a> \(1558\), wearing only a loincloth, carved by Montorsoli for the high altar of Santa Maria dei Servi, Bologna. Flanking Christ at a lower level are allegorical statues of Peace and Justice in the guise of lightly draped females.
