# Interior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, French]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary The Royal Monastery of Brou is a religious complex located at Bourg-en-Bresse in central France. It is composed of monastic buildings and a church, which were built at the beginning of the 16th century by Margaret of Austria, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. The church was built between 1513 and 1532 in a lavishly elaborate Flamboyant Gothic style, with some classicising Renaissance aspects. The monastery church of Brou is a conservative building in architectural terms, contemporary Late Gothic architecture is represented primarily by the opulent decoration running wild on the rood screen, choir stalls, and the famous tombs.
