## Commentary

This drawing shows three standing nude men and the leg of a fourth. It seems to come from a moment in Raphael's career when he was copying the Florentine masters and making variations on their inventions. Raphael used pen and ink extensively from 1505, when he was open to the influence of Leonardo's and Michelangelo's. Pen and ink allowed for strong delineation, but called for adding sequences of hatching to endow the form with mass and solidity. It was particularly suited for figure studies and the investigation of anatomical structures. Raphael utilized the springy, active lines of the pen in his study of Three Standing Nude Men, a drawing that particularly examines the relationship of contour to volume.
