## Commentary

The first relief of the narrative cycle depicts the Visitation and Nativity. At left there are two women with clasping hands representing the Visitation. Below them are two midwives washing the child, while in the centre of the relief Mary lounges like a classical goddess. To the right of her the panel depicts the visiting shepherds.
