## Commentary

This painting, which was probably part of a polyptych, is one of the most beautiful creations of the school of Seville. A second piece of the polyptych is in a private collection in Lucerne. The figures around the body of Christ recently removed from the cross are different in their clothes and gestures, although their positioning is monotonous. Joseph of Arimathea holds the upper part of Christ's body with Nicodemus assisting at the feet. Mary holds the lifeless hand of her son, Magdalene holds the shroud. John and the three Marys show different gestures of grief.
