## Commentary

As one of Europe&#39;s leading court painters, Tuxen produced a number of remarkably free oil sketches, among them the present portrait of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria \(1819-1901\) was queen of Great Britain for 63 years \(1837-1901\). To date, she is the second longest reigning British monarch after Queen Elizabeth II. Victoria&#39;s reign saw great cultural expansion; advances in industry, science, and communications; and the building of railways and the London Underground.
