## Commentary

In this painting Herrera follows the model of his own Triumph of St Hermengild. He conceives the subject as a surging apotheosis of the saint, who is carried triumphantly aloft by a convoy of angels and putti. The Stigmatisation of St Francis established a new standard in Seville. The dynamic composition, sketchy technique, rich, soft colours, and complicated poses immediately became the benchmark for local painters.

Suggested listening \(streaming mp3, 33 minutes\):
Michael Haydn: St Francis Mass
