## Commentary

Neufchatel was commissioned in 1566 to paint portraits of Emperor Maximilian II and Archduchess Anna. Of the three versions completed by Neufchatel, not one original remains; the various formats of the traditional version are certainly reproductions from his studio. The round version shown here, which focuses on the head of the sitter, was also created in Neufchatel&#39;s workshop.
