# Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oak, 180 x 312 cm ## Commentary Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons c. 1543 Oak, 180 x 312 cm Royal College of Surgeons of England, London Sitting enthroned and facing the viewer directly, Henry VIII pays no attention to the other figures in the picture. With his left hand he holds out a sealed document that is being taken by Thomas Vicary, the Master of the Barber Surgeons' Company. Various other members of the guild described by name, are placed on the right beside Vicary, some of them added later in the century.
