## Commentary

The painting is based on the &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/f/furtenag/luther.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/f/furtenag/luther.html&#34;&gt;authentic drawing by Lukas Furtenagel,&lt;/A&gt; who was summoned from Halle to paint the deceased Reformer on his deathbed. This drawing reached the Cranach workshop shortly after Luther&#39;s death. The painting in Hanover is thought to be the earliest and certainly the finest of all the surviving versions, and it reflects the serenity of Luther&#39;s death.
