# Monument to the Doge Marco Corner \(detail\) [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [PISANO, Nino]() - Date: 1351-1400 - Technique: Marble ## Commentary After the violent death of Filippo Calendario in 1355, the most demanding Venetian patrons had to decide whether to accept the modest offerings of local workshops or turn to outside sculptors. The tomb of Doge Marco Corner \(d. 1368\) in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo is a good example of how this situation was handled: apart from the recumbent figure of the deceased, all the sculptures were commissioned in Pisa from Nino Pisano and his shop.
