## Commentary

Equestrian portrait c. 1627 Oil on canvas, 262 x 163 cm Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp It used to be believed this was the portrait of the painter Cornelis de Wael whom van Dyck knew in Italy. However, the man in the portrait does not look similar to other portraits of de Wael. It is possible the model was a member of the Genovese Balbi family.
