# Woman Spinning [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MOREAU, Mathurin]() - Date: 1851-1900 - Technique: Marble, height 137 cm ## Commentary Sculptors around the hardcore of Neoclassical artists were alive to the advantages of neoclassicism, though they did not practice it exclusively. Not only was it capable of supplying a wealth of subject matter, antiquity also offered a way of giving graceful expression to themes that might have been situated in a quite different period. The Salons included a large number of such figures,, which were often referred to as "néo-grecques" \(neo-Greek\). The Woman Spinning is an example of the genre. One can admire the grace of the spinner's movement, the accuracy of her tall wicker basket, and the elegance of the drapery. The piece was praised by critics, and it enjoyed particular success.
