## Commentary

Virgin and Child under an Apple Tree 1525-30 Oil on canvas transferred from panel, 87 x 59 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg The Child Christ helds bread and apple in his hands. The apple is the symbol of the original sin, the bread \(the body of Christ\) of the redemption. The Virgin is considered to be the second Eve redempting the sin of the first.
