## Commentary

St John the Baptist c. 1386 Poplar panel, gold ground, 92 x 30 cm Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon The four panels in Avignon showing the standing Saints Peter, John the Baptist, Bartholomew and Nicholas probably formed the side panels of an altarpiece which had in the centre the Virgin and Child Enthroned \(signed and dated 1386, now in the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon\).
