## Commentary

The Vision of St Jerome c. 1627 Oil on canvas, 225 x 175 cm San Nicola da Tolentino, Venice Painted in delicate, tenuous hues, the painting represents the dialogue between St Jerome and an angel. It may well be the most original and important altarpiece produced in seventeenth-century Venice.
