# Cassianus Corvina [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, Hungarian]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Manuscript ## Commentary The library of Matthias, King of Hungary was seized by the Turks in 1526 and brought to Constantinople. The later scattered library became a legend of the humanists. Presently the number of the known volumes \(corvinas\) is above 200. Originally the library had about 1000 volumes. The Cassianus Corvina codex contains the work of an early Christian monk, Johannes Cassianus. The decoration of the manuscript was executed by an unknown painter working in the workshop at Buda, and referred to as the Cassianus Master after this codex.
